Day 48 - just past Fort McPherson km 86 - Inuvik, NT km 272- 2 degrees above artic circle, terminus of Dempster Hwy and halfway point of journey.

The rumours of summer turn out to be true today - the sun is out in full force and the temperature hovers around 26 degrees celsius. The array is set up to take advantage of the morning sun and we take the time to charge up electronics (generator), make space on the video camera, and consume our daily rations of mr. noodles and ice tea.

Not long after Marcelo makes the decision to get going, Chelly & Donna Woodford of Kentucky stop by to take photos, ask questions and wish us well. They had been told to keep an eye out for a solar car enroute to Inuvik and seemed quite pleased to have caught up with us.

With the sun still burning bright, we get onto the road around 3pm and reach the McKenzie River crossing just before 5pm. Brook, Catherine and Yuki are just ahead of us and we spend the short wait for the ferry chatting.

The XOF1 rolls onto the ferry with ease. During the short sail, Max chats with the captain, while the solar car and support van get a complimentary windshield cleaning from the ferry crew... Thanks!

We reach the other side quickly. The sun is still shining, the charge is high and there is only 130 km to go!

In contrast to the ups, downs, twists and turns of the previous 500 km, the remainder of the Dempster highway is relatively straight and flat. And dusty. Really dusty. With every green highway km marker we are counting down the distance to the hot showers at the Artic Chalet B & B - our generous hosts in Inuvik!

The final paved 10km of the Dempster feels unnaturally smooth. With much jubilation we reach the chalet round 9:45. We are greeted by the hosts Judi and Olav, and a bunch of curious students just back from a canoeing trip.

Max takes a snooze babysitting the array, while we charge the batteries.
Early in the morning Max goes around exploring the area and comes across a pond with little frogs. The wood frog is the only reptile found north of the artic circle. It was a friendly little frog, it didn't mind staying in Max's hand. It was probably a princess wating for a kiss.
Max didn't venture to kiss her and break the spell.... back to the pond.
Back on the road.
From afar, a view of the ferry that will take us across the mighty Mackenzie river.
Checking out the solar car while waiting for the ferry.
Our film crew hard at work, filming the car as it drives by.
Getting onto the Mackenzie river ferry.
The captain manoeuvers the ferry for a smooth docking on the other side of the river.
Xof1 on the ferry deck.
On the ferry deck... Is there really someone driving that thing?!
After the ferry it was a long, boring drive to Inuvik, only a few hiills and curves, the road was mainly flat and straight.
Arctic Chalet sign off the road, we made it, yeah!
A group of students staying at the Arctic Chalet gathered around the solar car to hear Marcelo talk about the car and the project.
XOF1 at the Arctic Chalet.
A modest dinner celebration... Apparently there's not many restaurants open in Inuvik after midnight.
Congratulations team!.
