We awoke to find ourselves socked in by a thick fog. With not much sun
to charge the battery much, the day is one of stops and starts where we
drive until the battery is near dead. Sit and wait and charge before leaving
again. When the batteries die again, we repeat the process.
At 346km from Dawson, pull over to rest stop to charge and adjust the wheel alignment where we are joined by Ryan Church - the artist who helped move the car to the side of the road yesterday and research assistant -Jean- Francois Aublet and Joey Bowden, Phd Candidate from McGill They learn about the solar car project and in turn, share some specimens and wolf spider knowledge.
We leave the rest stop around 5:30, but pull over again just a half hour
later to charge more. Todd and Marcelo take Max's camera and follow some
wolf prints down the road. Meanwhile, a wolf comes to investigate the Xof1
and remaining support crew. The wolf was either quite curious or hungry
or both because it lingered for awhile - watching us, sniffing the Xof1
before settling down in the dust a few meters from the van to observe us.
Two cars and Marcelo and Todd happened by at that moment and the wolf scampered
into the brush. He didn't go too far though and before long - with the
cars parked - he ventured out again. Marcelo, not realizing the wolf was
in fact wild, patted his thighs and called to it. He crouch down and put
out his hands to pet the creature - who had cautiously moved closer. The
wolf made a move to nip Marcelo's leg - with surprise, Marcelo jumped back
in time to avoid any contact.
The wolf quickly retreated the cover of the brush but kept an eye on us.
After the other cars left, he came out and before long, we all piled into
the safety of the van. Marcelo slammed the side door a few times to scare
the wolf away and we moved quickly to get Marcelo strapped in and ready
to go as soon as possible.
At km 324, we pulled into a wide turnoff and decided to make it the last
stop of the day. Max got the bbq/ stove going and Mo got the fire blazing
within no time. Soup, eggs, bacon, break, nutella and marshmallows made
the evening meal
