Day 65 - Denali Education Centre -MacKinley View Lodge, Alaska

Half the crew woke up in time to be invited to breakfast by Willie. Marcelo gave a presentation to the Elder Hostel guests about the car. He answered some questions afterward and meantime, the batteries charged.

The rest of the crew woke up and did laundry, napped, etcetera. Willie invited us to lunch - Jerk pork sandwiches. Mmmm.

At 14:41, we leave Denali Education Centre. The trip goes smoothly untill mile 55, at 16:40 when Marcelo does some "creative driving." Into the ditch. We hauled the solar car out and examined the damage. The right front wheel is about 90 degrees from where it should be, the steering rod is bent, the rodend bolt is sheared, so we start work.

A pin in the trailer hitch crank is sheared, and the mechanism needs some lube, and a replacement pin. More work.

John and Dana Schuette pull over, and we recognize them from our last breakdown. John helps us with a particularly troublesome bolt, and Dana makes sandwiches for the crew. THANK YOU!!!

At 23:42, we leave the site and drive on the batteries untill 01:20, when we arrive at the McKinley View Lodge as it starts to pour. Marcelo hits the bar to drown his sorrows with some coca-cola and while the crew gets to sleep. It didn't take long Marcelo were talking to people about the project. The rain never stopped, a constant pour between heavy and light.

The Denali Foundation sticker graces the solar car for some photo ops.
The drive is a sweet one. The menu at the McKinley lodge says that Mary Carrie petitioned for a highway to follow this particular path because of the views. Understandable. Thank you M.C.
The mountain ranges are be-a-U-tiful.
Pretty, pretty!
Into the ditch. Marcelo is always on the lookout for berries whenever he has a "nature call" break. We were wondering if he went looking for berries while driving the solar car.
The crew works to get the car out of the clutches of the highway foliage.
Here you can see, the wheel ain't quite the way it used to be.
Almost like the way airplanes collapse their landing gear. However, this one wasn't planned :(
Another view of the damage done.
Carrie caught sabotaging the array charge.
Marcelo and his alien leader pictured on the van. Sun is seen in the background.
Michael plans out the intergalactic marketing strategy for the XOF1 project.
The crew amuses themselves.
Our American Samaritans John & Dana Schuette get us back on the road - with a fixed car and yummy sandwiches!
The yummy sandwiches being gratefully devoured by the crew. (Dana even packed us a goodie bag when they left!) Thank you both again!
